The Mom

Hi!  I’m Jen.  I’m a homeschooling mama of one very inquisitive, outgoing and active boy. jen with hat and boo square.jpg

I used to be a semi-big-time mommy blogger at My Skewed View by Jen Kehl. I originally created My Skewed View for parents and caregivers of children with Sensory Processing Disorder, Food Allergies and related issues, then it morphed into a parenting and homeschool blog. And more recently became a free-for-all. Life as a Mommy Blogger was pretty intense and competitive, and took a toll on my ability to be a present mom who put her heart into her home school.

Recently I experienced a paradigm shift in my life and as far as my homeschooling went.  And so I began blogging here and have been moving some of my relevant homeschool posts here too.

I made the decision to homeschool my son using the Waldorf method about 5 years ago; however, as we entered first grade, it became ever so apparent that true Waldorf was not working very well for us.

So I jumped ship.

That didn’t work either.  I really missed, and loved, the beauty of a Waldorf rhythm. I loved the nature, the movement, the art.  I just didn’t love the pace at which we were learning, the doctrine behind the process, some of the “necessary” components and the frustration that ensued when the boy wasn’t ready.

It took some time to find the right blend, but I truly believe we can have the best of both worlds.

So I began blogging that process here. I don’t know what to call it, maybe Waldorf Unschooling with a twist?

See what you think.

The longer I homeschool, the more I realize that the place for rules is in school. I homeschool so that my son can learn intuitively and be driven by what interests him.

Stories that captivate him teach him lessons that sink in days later, his mind is open and wondering and full of creativity and action! His fascination can dictate next weeks lessons, and if it turns out to be a dud, we can change our mind.

I admit it, it was hard to throw down that rulebook, but now that I have, I feel like we are finally free!

Join me on our journey, and tell me all about yours!
